Snow day 2012!

So...for those of you who don't live in Lincoln or the surrounding areas, here's a little back-story:
A few days ago, the weathermen started warning us that there was a winter storm coming this weekend and suggested we stock up before it hits.  It rained all day yesterday and seemed like it was going to just keep raining.  I had planned on picking up a few things at HyVee after work, so stopped after teaching last.  I miraculously found a decent parking spot and took the second-to-last cart inside the door.  Needless to say, it was insanity inside.  They were running out of things left and right and had several large pallets of items in the isles.  The workers looked as though they'd been through a roller coaster in a hurricane and strangers were talking to each other about their own weather predictions, whether or not they have to be out of the house the next day, and how crazy Nebraska weather is.


As it turns out, the weathermen were correct - we got hit with over 13 inches of snow (so far) starting after 11 p.m. last night.  My aunt and I were planning on leaving early this morning to Lindsborg, KS to celebrate my grandparent's anniversary, but decided not to since we couldn't see the end of the driveway and were in a Winter Weather Advisory till this evening.  As a result, we had a snow day.  Here is documentation of the day's festivities.  : )

Since we couldn't go to Lindsborg (a.k.a. Little Sweden), I decided to bring a little taste of Sweden here and made Swedish pancakes for breakfast.

My dad made these every Sunday morning when we lived at home (and still does!), so I thought I'd try my hand at them.  First attempt: not a success...

Of course, there was lots of productivity and "screen time" throughout the day, too.  I was sad to not be with my family, but was glad for the day of "whatever you want to do."

Marshmallow World...and other news

At the risk of being cliché with the weather-reporting, you should be aware of this: 

Earlier today I wore only a fleece jacket while running errands after church, washed my car, and opened the sunroof while driving.  Now, the ground is white.  Not just a dusting - it's real snow.  We got a little bit earlier this week, and I took the kids I nanny for out to play in it.  They went nuts!  Needless to say, even though I'd warned them we couldn't stay out long because of the cold, they would've rather gotten frostbite than go inside when I informed them it was time to do so.  Don't worry - we made it safely inside with only cold noses and cheeks.

I used to say I liked winter more than summer, because I like to play in the snow, then be cozy and warm inside when it's cold outside.  I'm really ready for some sunshine and flip-flop weather, though.  That vacation to Florida last summer created an insatiable desire to lie on the beach for hours on end...seriously.  So, if any of you happen to be heading to a coast in the near future and need some company, I'm your girl.

Anyway, hope you all had a great weekend - I sure did!  It included quality time with various friends (games, movies, eating out...and lots of laughing), as well as a rehearsal for the recital I'm performing on this week.  My former trumpet professor/current boss, one of his students (a good friend), and I will be giving a lunchtime recital this Friday (the 27th) at First United Methodist Church.  (Facebook event - click here.)  The recital is titled "Bach's Lunch" and there will be a free box lunches (get it?)!  If you're free or able to take a lunch hour break, we'd love to have you there!  Let me know if you have any questions.

One more thing - my roomie is on Pinterest and shares lots of her findings with me.  This one really spoke to me tonight, for some reason: http://itsrusticliving.blogspot.com/2011/09/red-or-white-towels-that-is.html.  It's a wine rack used as a hanging towel rack!  This "pin" almost put me over the "whether or not to join Pinterest" fence.  I resisted the temptation, though, and decided to avoid addiction a little while longer.  Do any of you have thoughts on whether or not to join?  OR do you have awesome things you've found on there you'd like to share?  : )  By the way, seeing some of these ideas also makes me want to have a house of my own...

My weekend:

Happy Monday, everyone!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  Here are a couple highlights from mine:

I went to a second (or third...or second, once removed...?) cousin's wedding.  It was beautiful and great to see family!

This was the ceiling at the reception.  Can you tell the white stuff is that plastic table cloth that comes on rolls?  Pretty impressive, huh?!

I just thought this cake was very classy, and could appreciate the amount of time and skill it took to decorate it so intricately.  It tasted good, too!  : )

While this wedding was beautiful, special, etc., it was a little strange for me, because the couple was 1-2 years younger than me.  I know plenty of younger engaged couples, but this was the first wedding I'd actually attended where I was older than those getting married.  I kept thinking, "They're just babies - they can't be getting married!"  Just a weird feeling...that will only continue to arise, I'm sure.

Those of you living in Lincoln (or the surrounding areas) know that we had some crazy, intense storms last night...and we drove home in them.  Thankfully, I wasn't the one driving, but I was the one receiving texts from friends telling us to turn on the radio and be safe just as we were embarking on the edge of the storm.  As soon as we turned on the radio, they were talking about how the worst of it was right where we were headed, and that you should pull over if you're on I-80...which we were.  We did end up pulling off for a bit, because visibility was at 2 feet...or less.  Obviously, we made it home safely, but it took awhile.  

Don't know if you can tell, but it was a double rainbow.  We could see them both in full, but of course, couldn't capture them in a picture from the car.

These clouds were on the edge of the storm.  I'd never seen anything like them.
